Our brief challenge was to develop an in-ear headphone that doesn’t fall out, is easy to put in and has a universal fit.
Our belief was that a headphone doesn’t have to look like it is attached to your ear to stay securely in place. We developed numerous ideas after a rigorous ideation process which we then tested with users to narrow down to the most promising concepts to develop further.
Our final concept was inspired by the airless tire by Michelin, which adapts to its surroundings and shifts pressure around making it ideal for any environment. Since no human ears are alike, this direction yielded a solution which we spent months refining to ensure we had the best fit for anyone.
To get the product to market, we spent over a year working with our engineers to get the product manufactured to match the intended design. This was crucial as even the smallest addition in mass or change of an angle would mean the product didn’t fit and feel as it should.
Our work on this product got us two patents, a Red Dot Design award for design excellence, and an IDSA silver award in 2014.
